The lake was built to supply water to a new larger sanatorium which was never built due to opposition and lack of funds. There was much opposition to the Sanatorium as many residents of Macedon Ranges thought it inadvisable to build a place for consumptives in a fashionable health resort like Mount Macedon. Sanatorium lake was built around 1899 to supply water to the Tuberculosis Sanatorium, which was situated on a five-acre property in the hills on the Mounts on the Towrong side of the Willimigongong Creek.
